Question

What would be Ψp of a flaccid cell? Which organisms other than plants possess cell wall?

Open in App
Solution

  • p signifies the pressure potential of a cell. The pressure potential is the positive pressure developed in a system due to the entry of water into the system by osmosis.
  • The pressure potential is positive in the case of a turgid cell and negative is the case of a plasmolyzed cell. In a flaccid cell, there is no entry or exit of water due to osmosis so the pressure potential or ᴪp of a flaccid cell would be zero (0).
  • The organisms other than plants which possess cell wall are fungi and few prokaryotes (bacterial type cells). The cell walls in each group of organisms vary distinctly.
  • The cell wall of plants is made of cellulose but the cell wall of fungi is made up of chitin and silica whereas in prokaryotes (bacterial type cells) the cell walls are composed of peptidoglycan.
