Solution

Electronic configuration:

  1. The distribution of electrons in various energy levels or shells of an atom of the element is known as its electronic configuration.
  2. Starting from the nucleus, the shells are named as K,L,M,N,….. and so on.
  3. The capacity of K shell is to hold maximum 2 electrons, that of L shell is to hold 8 electrons, that of M shell is to hold 18 electrons and that of N shell is to hold 32 electrons.

Electronic configuration of Na+:

  1. The atomic number of Sodium (Na) is 11. Thus, Sodium atom has 11 electrons.
  2. One positive charge on Na+ indicates that Na+ ion is formed when Sodium atom loses one electron.
  3. Thus, Na+ ion has 11-1=10 electrons.
  4. In the electronic configuration of Na+ ion, 2 electrons accommodate in the K shell and the remaining 8 electrons accommodate in the L shell.
  5. Thus, the electronic configuration of Na+ is (2,8).

Electronic configuration of Al3+:

  1. The atomic number of Aluminium (Al) is 13. Thus, Aluminium atom has 13 electrons.
  2. Three positive charges on Al3+ indicates that Al3+ ion is formed when Aluminium atom loses three electrons.
  3. Thus, Al3+ ion has 13-3=10 electrons.
  4. In the electronic configuration of Al3+ ion, 2 electrons accommodate in the K shell and the remaining 8 electrons accommodate in the L shell.
  5. Thus, the electronic configuration of Al3+ is (2,8).

Electronic configuration of O2-:

  1. The atomic number of Oxygen (O) is 8. Thus, Oxygen atom has 8 electrons.
  2. Two negative charges on O2- indicates that O2- ion is formed when Oxygen atom gains two electrons.
  3. Thus, O2- ion has 8+2=10 electrons.
  4. In the electronic configuration of O2- ion, 2 electrons accommodate in the K shell and the remaining 8 electrons accommodate in the L shell.
  5. Thus, the electronic configuration of O2- is (2,8).

Electronic configuration of Cl-:

  1. The atomic number of Chlorine (Cl) is 17. Thus, Chlorine atom has 17 electrons.
  2. One negative charge on Cl- indicates that Cl- ion is formed when Chlorine atom gains one electron.
  3. Thus, Cl- ion has 17+1=18 electrons.
  4. In the electronic configuration of Cl- ion, 2 electrons accommodate in the K shell, 8 electrons accommodate in the L shell and the remaining 8 electrons accommodate in the M shell.
  5. Thus, the electronic configuration of Cl- is (2,8,8)

Thus, the electronic configurations of Na+, Al3+, O2-and Cl-are (2,8), (2,8), (2,8) and (2,8,8) respectively.
