Question

What would be the product if a compound containing carbon is burnt?

Open in App
Solution

When a carbon compound is burnt in presence of a sufficient amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide and water are produced.
The general equation for the combustion of an organic compound containing hydrocarbon is as follow:
CxHy + ZO2XCO2+ nH2O
The presence of carbon dioxide can be confirmed by passing it through lime water which turns milky.
The reaction for the above reaction is as follow:
CO2 + Ca(OH)2CaCO3 + H2O
Here calcium carbonate is responsible for the milkiness of water.
