What would happen if iron powder is heated with copper oxide.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Iron is more reactive as compared to the copper. So when iron react with copper oxide it displace the copper from its oxide as it is more reactive as compared to the copper. Copper oxide is reduced to copper by the iron. You will observe a glow when iron react with copper oxide and brown elemental copper will be formed.

Reaction:

Iron + copper oxide → copper + iron oxide

Fe (s) + CuO (s) ------> FeO (s) + Cu (s)
