Question

what would happen when one grows a recombinant bacterium in abioreactor but forget to add antibiotic to the medium in which the recombinant is growing?

Open in App
Solution

If antibiotic is not added to the medium in which a recombinant is growing it won’t be possible to select the recombinant bacteria from a mix of recombinant and non-recombinant bacteria. If we grow the bacteria on a solid media which contains an antibiotic, only the cells that were transformed with a plasmid of our choice containing the gene for antibiotic resistance will grow and the others will die making it possible for us to screen the recombinant bacteria.
