Open in App
Solution

Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it'sused in a thermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures

Water freezes, and expansion would break the glass tube. And mercury hasn't been usedfor a long time. ... It is a property ofmercury that it will respond very easily with small increase in temperature. When you use water in the thermometer certainlyit will not react to our body temperature.
