What would happened to the railings on he road side if they are not painted ?why does it happen so?

If the iron railing on the roadside are not been painted it gets rusted.
It happens because the iron railing comes in contact with the components of air such as oxygen and moisture which are the main reason for rusting.If we paint it we can prevent the oxygen and moisture to come in contact with.Thus we can prevent the iron railings from getting rusted.So the iron railings on the road side are painted.
