Solution

Aluminum Al burnt in a jar of nitrogen gas N2:

  • When aluminum is burnt in a jar of nitrogen gas, aluminum nitride (AlN) is formed.
  • 2Al(s)+N2(g)2AlN(s)

Addition of water to aluminum nitride AIN:

  • Aluminum nitride undergo hydrolysis and is decomposed by water to give ammonia gas.
  • AlN(s)+3H2O(l)Al(OH)3(aq)+NH3(g)

Therefore, when aluminum is burnt in a jar of nitrogen gas, aluminum nitride is formed which reacts with water to release ammonia gas.
