Solution

  • When an aqueous solution of ammonium hydroxide is added to the solution of Copper sulphate, a pale blue colored precipitate of Copper hydroxide is formed..
  • CuSO4 (aq) + 2NH4OH (aq) ⇢ Cu(OH)2 (ppt) + (NH4)2SO4(aq)
  • This Copper hydroxide of light blue color dissolves in excess of Ammonium hydroxide to yield a deep blue solution containing the complex ion, tetraamminecopper(II)
  • Cu(OH)2 (ppt) + NH4OH(aq) ⇢ Cu(NH3)4(OH)2 (aq) + 4 H2O (aq)
