Question

What would you see, when ethyne is bubbled through a solution of Bromine in Carbon tetrachloride?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Ethyne is an unsaturated hydrocarbon and is an organic compound.
  2. When Ethyne is bubbled through a solution of bromine in Carbon tetrachloride we get Acetylene dibromide or Ethylene Bromide as the product.
  3. Due to the formation of Ethylene Bromide (Colourless) the orange-brown colour of Bromine disappears.
  4. The chemical reaction occurs as follows:
  5. C2H2(g)+Br2CCl4Br-CH2-CH2-BrEthyneBromineEthyleneBromide
  6. Hence, we concluded that when Ethyne is bubbled through a solution of bromine in Carbon tetrachloride then due to the formation of Ethylene Bromide the orange-brown colour of Bromine disappears.
