Question

When 1 mole of CrCl3.6H2O is treated with AgNO3, x moles of AgCl are obtained. The formula of the compound is [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3, y is the oxidation number of Cr and z is the coordination number of the compound. The value of 2x+yz is ___.

Solution

The formula of the compound is [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3 has three 3 free Cl ions. Since x moles of AgCl are obtained, the value of x is 3.

The oxidation number y of the central atom in [Cr(H2O)6]3+ = 3. Since there are 6 ligands in the inner sphere of the complex, it is octahedral. So z = 6

So, 2×3+36=3
