Question

When 10 g mixture of Na2CO3 and NaOH was titrated against HCl by using phenolphthalein followed by adding methyl orange after first equivalence point, 7.7818 g of HCl was consumed in total. Find the mass of Na2CO3 in the mixture.

Solution

10g of Na2CO3 and NaOH, total HCl moles equal to twice Na2CO3 moles + NaOH moles
7.78189 of HCl=0.2132 moles
Let x g of Na2CO3=x106 moles
moles of NaOH=10x40 moles
0.2132=2(x106)+10x40
0.2132=14+x(153140)
x6.0012g
