Question

When 2-butyne is treated with H2/Lindlar's catalyst, compound X is produced as the major product and when treated with Na/liq.NH3 it produced Y as the major product. Which of the following statements is correct?
(1) X will have higher dipole moment and higher boiling point than Y.
(2) Y will have higher dipole moment and higher boiling point than X.

Solution

Lindlar catalyst gives Cis alkene while Na/liq.NH3 gives trans alkene.

Since dipole moment cis - > trans X > Y (dipole moment).
Boiling point is higher in case of cis product than trans product, because of
μ cis > μ trans (dipole moment).

Hence, statement 1 is correct.
