Question

When a body executes forced oscillations of large amplitude, the frequency of external periodic force is same as the natural frequency of oscillations of the system. This phenomenon is known as ___________________ .

Solution

  1. Resonance is a special case of forced vibrations in which the externally applied periodic force has the same frequency as the natural or free vibration frequency of the vibrating body.
  2. If a vibrating system is subjected to the action of an external periodic force, the system executes what is referred to as forced oscillations.
  3. In general the frequency of the external periodic force and the natural frequency of the vibrating system are unequal.
  4. If, however, the frequency of the external periodic force is made equal to the natural frequency of the vibrating system, the system executes oscillations of maximum amplitudes.

Hence, When a body executes forced oscillations of large amplitude, the frequency of external periodic force is same as the natural frequency of oscillations of the system. This phenomenon is known as resonance.
