Solution

Both physical and chemical changes take place in a burning candle.
a) Melting of wax is a physical change as no new substance is formed.
b) Burning of the wax and wick produces new substances like ash and smoke and is hence, a chemical change.

Another example in which both physical and chemical changes occur is the burning of camphor.
a) On absorbing heat, the solid camphor sublimes into its gaseous state. This is a physical change since no new substance is formed.
b) The gaseous camphor further takes up heat to burn and produces smoke and ashes. Since new substances are formed, it is a chemical change.
