Question

When a certain weight is suspended from a long uniform wire(massless), its length increases by 1 cm. If the same weight is suspended from another wire(massless) of the same material and length but having a diameter half of the first one, the increase in length will be (in cm)

Solution

Since, force, material and length are same thus, extension is dependent only on area and inversely proportional to it.
Young's modulus : y=F/AΔL/L
ΔL1=1 cm, A1=πr21,A2=πr22
F/A1ΔL1/L=F/A2ΔL2/L
ΔL2ΔL1=A1A2=πr21πr22
ΔL2=r21r22×ΔL1
ΔL2=r21(r2)2×ΔL1
ΔL2=4×1
ΔL2=4 cm
