Question

When a ferromagnetic substance is placed in a magnetic field, the lines of force prefer to pass through the substance rather than air. Explain.

Solution

substances which are strongly magnetized in an external magnetic field in the same direction as the external applied field and retain its magnetic moment even after removal of external field are called as ferromagnetic substances. The magnetic lines of force prefer to pass through ferromagnetic substances than air because the permeability of ferromagnetic materials is larger than air.
Examples of ferromagnetic substances: iron, nickel, cobalt etc.
