Question

when a force F1 is applied on a wire its length is L1 & when a force F2 on the same wire its final length is L2. What is the initial length of the wire when no force is applied on it?

Solution

Dear Student,

we know that force on the wire is proportional to the change in its length. i.e.,

F = kx. Therefore,

let initial length be 'L' , then change in length when forces F1 , F2 are applied will be (L-L1) and (L-L2) respectively,So, F1=k (L-L1) (1)and, F2=k (L-L2) (2)(1)/(2) gives :F1F2=k (L-L1) k (L-L2)=(L-L1) (L-L2)Solving it :L=(F1L2-F2L1)(F1-F2)

Manoj Singh.
