Question

When a glass rod is rubbed with resin, a mass of 27.3×10-14g is transferred from glass to resin. Find the amount of charge acquired by the glass rod. What is the nature of the charge? (Charge of electron =1.6×10-19C, Mass of electron =9.1×10-31kg)

Solution

Step 1: Given the data and formula used:

Mass M=27.3×10-14g

Charge of electron e=1.6×10-19C

Mass of electron me=9.1×10-31kg

Mass =27.3×10-14g

We know that 1g=10-3kg

Mass =27.3×10-14×10-3kg

=27.3×10-17kg

We know that,

M=n×me

n=Mme

Where n is the number of electrons, me is the mass of the electron and M is the mass of the charges that are transferred.

Step 2: Finding the amount of charge acquired by the glass rod:

Substituting the values

n=27.3×10-179.1×10-31n=3×1014

We know that, Q=ne

Substituting the values in the above formula

Q=3×1014×1.6×10-19Q=Q=4.8×10-5CQ=48×10-6C

We know that 1μC=10-6C then,

Q=48μC

Hence, the amount of charge acquired by the glass rod is 48μC and the nature of the charge is positive.
