A U-shaped or a horse-shoe magnet has two open ends which serve as poles. A magnet has maximum attractive property at its two ends and zero attractive property at its center. When a horse-shoe magnet is dipped in iron fillings, the maximum number of iron fillings clings at the two ends of it as shown in the figure below.
