Question

When a KI solution was added to a solution of mercury (II) chloride, a precipitate mercury (II) iodide formed. A student plotted the mass of the precipitate versus the volume of the KI solution added and obtained the above graph.

Solution

The correct option is A Nessler's reagent
HgCl2 reacts with KI to form HgI2.

HgCl2+2KIHgI2+2KCl

As the reaction proceeds, more and more of HgI2 is obtained until a maximum value is reached.
Then the mass of HgI2 decreases due to formation of K2HgI4.

HgI2+2KIK2HgI4

Species formed after maximum is attained is called Nessler's reagent.
Nessler's reagent is used to idntify NH+4 ions.

2K2HgI4+4KOH+NH4ClHg2NH2OIbrown precipitate+7KI+KCl+3H2O

Therefore, option A is correct.
