Question

When a long glass capillary tube of radius 0.015 cm is dipped in a liquid, the liquid rises to a height of 15 cm within it. If the contact angle between the liquid and glass to close to 0, the surface tension of the liquid (in mN m1) is ______.
(Give answer in the closest integer)

[ρ(liquid)=900 kg m3, g=10 ms2]

Solution

Given,
r=0.015 cm=15×105 m
h=15 cm=15×102 m

Capillary rise is given by,

h=2Tcosθρgr [cosθ=cos0=1]
T=rhρg2=15×105×15×102×900×102
=101.25×103 N m1101 mN m1
