Question

When a low flying aircraft passes over head, we sometimes notice a slight shaking of the picture on our TV screen. Identify the optical phenomenon behind it.

Solution

There is interference of the waves which reach the antenna directly and the waves which get reflected from the aircraft.
Since the aircraft is moving, this interference pattern thus produced is unstable, which results in the shaking of the TV image.
