Question

When a metal X is treated with cold water, it gives a basic salt Y with molecular formula XOH (Molecular mass =40) and liberates a gas Z which easily catches fire. Identify X,Y and Z and also write the reaction involved.

Solution

Chemical reaction:

  • “The reaction in which change in chemical properties takes place is called a chemical reaction.”

Identification of X,Y and Z:

  • As the molecular mass of XOH is 40, therefore, the sum of the molecular masses of all elements is given as

X+O+H=40X+16+1=40X=40-17X=23

  • The molecular mass of Xis 23, therefore, the metal X is Na.
  • As X is Na, therefore, the salt Y is NaOH.
  • The reaction of Sodium with cold water takes place as

2Na(s)Sodium+2H2O(l)Water2NaOH(l)Sodiumhydroxide+H2(g)Hydrogengas

  • In this reaction, hydrogen gas is evolved which also catches fire easily, therefore, the gas Z is H2.
