Question

When a metal x is treated with cold water a basic salt y with molecular mass 56 is liberated. Identify X Y and Z with reactions involved

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Given, molecular formula of Y = XOH

And molecular mass OF Y = 56.

So, atomic mass of metal X would be;

M + 16 + 1 = 56
=> M = 56 − 17 = 39

Metal with atomic mass 39 is Potassium and reaction of it with cold water will form potassium hydroxide (KOH).

2K + 2H2O (Cold) ----> 2KOH + H2↑

Hence; X = Potassium (K), Y = Potassium hydroxide (KOH), Z = Hydrogen gas (H2)
