Light adaptation
When a person is exposed to light on leaving a dark room, he is temporarily blinded. The eyes gradually adapt to the light. This is called light adaptation. Similarly, when entering a dark from a brightly lit room, he is initially blinded. Gradually, the objects are discerned in outline and then in detail. This is called dark adaptation.
Dark adaptation:
(i) The pupils dilate to allow more light to enter the eye.
(ii) The pigment of the rods - visual purple is regenerated.
Light adaptation:
(i) The pupils constrict to prevent entry of light into the eye.
(ii) The visual purple is bleached to reduce the sensitivity of the rods.
(iii) Eyelids close partially to allow less light to enter.
