Question

When a pink flowered antirrhinum plant was self-pollinated, the progeny produced contained red, pink and white flowered individuals. Work out across and ascertain the genotypes of the parent and those of the progeny. Explain the pattern of inheritance in this case.

Solution

Incomplete dominance is a form of intermediate inheritance in which one allele for a specific trait is not completely expressed over its paired allele. This results in a third phenotype in which the expressed physical trait is a combination of the phenotypes of both alleles. Antirrhinum plant is an example of incomplete dominance. Here, the pink flowers (Rr) were selected as the parental generation. When these parental pink flowers are self-fertilized to raise the F1 generation, they produce red (RR), pink (Rr) and white (rr) flowers give in 1:2:1 ratio as shown in the image representation. This phenotypic ratio is identical with genotypic ratio because heterozygotes are phenotypically intermediate between two homozygous types.
