Oogenesis:

1. It is said to be formation of female gametes.
2. In human females, certain cells in the germinal epithelium divide by mitosis to produce a large number of oogonia (diploid).
3. The oogonia usually multiply by mitotic divisions to form primary oocytes (diploid).
4. Each of the primary oocytes also undergoes two maturation divisions.
5. In first meiotic division, the primary oocyte divides into 2 very unequal haploid daughter cells- a large secondary oocyte & a small first polar body.
6. In 2nd maturation division (mitotic), the first polar body may also divide to form two second polar bodies, and the secondary oocyte divides to form 2 unequal daughter cells, a large ootid, and a small polar body.
