Question

When a series combination of inductance and resistance are connected with a 10V.50 Hz a.c. source, a current of 1A flows in the circuit . The voltage leads the current by a phase angle of π3 radian. Calculate the values of resistance and inductive reactance.

Solution

Inductive reactance XL=|ωL|
as shown in phasor diagram.
tanπ3=I×LIR=ωLR=3ωL=3R(1)
Applying KVL
jIXL+IR=10jωL+R=10i=107=10ωL+R=5(ii)
From equation (ii) and (i)
(3+1)R=10R=5×23+1=3.66ΩωL=3×R=3.660×3L=6.330ωL=126.6mHL=0.126H
