Question

When a series combination of inductance and resistance are connected with a 10 V, 50 Hz AC source, a current of 1 A flows in the circuit. The voltage leads the current by a phase angle of π3 radian. Calculate the values of resistance and inductance.

Solution

Given : Vrms=10 V Irms=1 A ϕ=π3 f=50 Hz
Impedance Z=VrmsIrms=101=10Ω
Using cosϕ=RZ
Or cosπ3=R10 R=5Ω
Using Z2=R2+(2πf L)2
Or 102=52+(2π×50×L)2
L=28 mH
