When a shot-put champion releases a 5.0 kg shot, it is at 1.5 m above the ground and travelling at 10 ms. It reaches a maximum height of 5 m above the ground. What are the total mechanical energy, kinetic energy and potential energy of the shot at its maximum height?
325 J, 75 J, 250 J
Substituting the values of mass, height and velocity of the shot in the formula:
Total energy = Potential energy + Kinetic energy = m × g × h + 12 mv2 = 325 J
The total mechanical energy will remain the same throught the flight.
Now, Potential energy = mgh = (5 × 10 × 5) = 250 J and Kinetic energy = 325 J - 250 J = 75 J
