When a straight conductor carrying current is held parallel and above a freely suspended magnetic needle deflects towards west.
The direction in which the north pole of the magnetic needle will move depends on the direction of current in the conductor and the relative position of conductor with respect to the magnetic needle. It means it will depend upon whether the conductor is above the needle or below the needle.
