(a) How much heat flows into the system along path ADB if the work done ins 10J? (b) When the system is returned from the state B to A along the curved path, the work done on the system is 20J. Does the system absorb or liberate heat, and how much? (c) If UDUA=40J, find the heat absorbed in the process AD and DB.

Since ΔU is independent of path.
ΔU(AB)=q(ACB)+w(ACB)=8030=50J
(a) ΔU=50J=q(ADB)+w(ADB)
q(ADB)=50(10)=40J
(b) q(BA)=ΔU(BA)w(BA)=(50)20=70J[ΔU(AB)=ΔU(BA)]
Hence the system liberates heat.
(c) ΔU(ADB)=ΔU(AD)+ΔU(DB)
ΔU(DB)=5040=10J
Again,
ΔU(DB)=q(DB)+w(DB)
V(DB) is constant.
w(DB)=0
q(DB)=ΔU(DB)=10J
Now,
q(ADB)=q(AD)+q(DB)
q(AD)=4010=30J[q(ADB)=40J]
