During the first exposure of the allergen to the body's immune system there is no allergic reaction. The immune system prepares itself - A few immune cells signal other immune cells to produce allergen specific antibodies called the IgE antibodies. The IgE against the allergen is released into the bloodstream and they bind to specific immune cells.
When the body is exposed to the allergen for a second time, the allergen binds with these specific IgE bound immune cells to secrete a substance called histamine. Histamine causes allergic reaction and results in swelling/inflammation. Certain drugs called antihistamines can prevent allergic reactions.
