Question

When an ebonite rod is rubbed with wool, the rod becomes negatively charged. Why?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When an ebonite rod is rubbed with wool, the rod becomes negatively charged because the electrons get transferred to the ebonite rod.
  2. Due to this wool gets a deficiency of electrons and so it gets positively charged and the rod gets excess electrons and therefore it gets negatively charged.
  3. On rubbing an ebonite rod with wool or a cat's skin, the electrons from the cat's skin or wool get transferred to the ebonite rod.
  4. The wool/cat's skin now has a deficiency of electrons and so is positively charged.
  5. On the other hand, the ebonite rod has an excess of electrons and hence is negatively charged.

Hence, When an ebonite rod is rubbed with wool, they get oppositely charged due to conduction and the statement is true.
