Question

When an ionic bond forms, eg Na and Cl, one electron is transferred to chlorine by sodium. It forms one positive ion Na+ and negative ion Cl-. But what happens to protons of both these elements, and no of proton and electron should be equal, now sodium has only 10 electron but 11 protons and chlorine has 10 electron but 9 protons ??? Didn't atoms need to be as a whole neutral?

Solution

If you are talking about the ionic bond, Molecule of NaCl is stable because it has an equal number of electrons and protons. If you are talking about breaking of ionic bond between Na and Cl of NaCl molecule, Na+ and Cl- ions are formed, which are unstable.

Yes, atoms need to be neutral/stable but IONS don't.
