Question

When an iron nail is dipped in the copper oxide + acetic + salt solution, it acquires a thin copper layer. Why does this happen? Write the chemical and word equation.

Solution

Copper oxide in presence of acetic acid and salt forms sodium acetate leaving particles of copper floating in the solution. When iron nails are dipped in it, they get copper plated because iron being more reactive attracts copper towards itself ( displacement reaction) iron + copper acetate→copper + iron acetate
