Question

When an object can be seen with one eye, why is it that we have a pair of eyes?

Open in App
Solution

There are several advantages of us having two eyes instead of one.
  • Two eyes give us a wider field of view. A human being has a horizontal field of view of about 150o with one eye and of about 180o with two eyes.
  • The ability to detect faint objects is also enhanced with two detectors instead of one.
  • The two eyes give us a sense of depth. It makes us see the world in 3-D. With one eye, we wouldn't be able to sense or detect the depth or distance of objects in front of us.
  • The parallax error is also reduced when things are viewed through 2 eyes.
Thus, we have a pair of eyes than one single eye.
