Question

When an unconfined compression test is conducted on a cylinder of soil, it fails under axial stress of 1.2kg/cm2. The failure plane makes an angle of 50 with the horizontal. Determine the cohesion of the soil
  1. 0.503

Solution

The correct option is A 0.503
Given

σ1=1.2kg/cm2

45+ϕ2=50

ϕ=10

Angle of internal friction = 10

We know that,

σ1=σ3tan2(45+ϕ2)+2c tan(45+ϕ2)

In UCS test,
σ3=0

σ1=2c tan(45+ϕ2)

1.2=2c tan50

c=0.503 kg/cm2

Cohesion = 0.503kg/cm2
