Question

When anything goes at a speed greater than that of sound, first it has to cross sound barrier ant doing so, it creates sonic boom (For ex. fighter jets). And we know that light is nothing but photons. And these photons have enormousspeed (c). So, why doesn'tthese photons create any sonic boom?

Solution

The sound associated with the shock waves created by an object travelling through the air faster than the speed of sound, is sonic boom. It is true that if an object travels faster than the speed of sound, it has to cross sound barrier and creates sonic boom. It is not so in the case of light.
Light is an electromagnetic wave. It is a vibration of electric and magnetic field in perpendicular directions. Sonic boom occurs when a source of strong sound and not light travels faster than speed of sound in that medium. Light shows dual behaviour. It shows wave nature as well as particle nature. The particle of light is called photon.
