Brine is a solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) and water (H2O). When sodium hydroxide and chlorine are allowed to mix, the reaction goes as below:
Cl2(aq) + 2 OH-(aq) OCl-(aq) + Cl-(aq) + H2O(l)
Sodium hyprochlorite is produced from the above reaction.
Uses of sodium hypochlorite:
  • It is an active ingredient in bleaching powder.
  • It is used as disinfectant.
  • It is used in cleaning water.
