With KNO₂ the chloroethane forms an ionic compound and with AgNO₂ it forms a covalent compound. The reactions are
$C_{2} H_{5} C l + K N O_{2} \to C_{2} H_{5} - O - N O + K C l C_{2} H_{5} C l + A g N O_{2} \to C_{2} H_{5} - N O_{2} + K C l$
