Question

When chromite ore FeCr2O4 is fused with NaOH in presence of air, a yellow coloured compound (A) is obtained which on acidification with dilute sulphuric acid gives a compound (B). Compound (B) on reaction with KCl forms a orange coloured crystalline compound (C).
(i) Write the formulae of the compounds (A), (B), and (C).
(ii) Write one use of compound (C).
OR
Complete the following chemical equations:
(i) 8MnO4+3S2O23+H2O
(ii) Cr2O27+3Sn2++14H+

Solution

When chromite ore FeCr2O4 is fused with NaOH in presence of air, a yellow coloured compound obtained is chromate Na2CrO4 (A).
FeCr2O4+NaOH+O2Na2CrO4+Fe2O3+H2O
This chromate with acidification with H2SO4 forms sodium dichromate (B), sodium sulfate and water.
Na2CrO4+H2SO4Na2Cr2O7+Na2SO4+H2O
Sodium dichromate with KCl forms an orange crystalline compound potassium dichromate (C) .
Na2Cr2O7+KClK2Cr2O7+NaCl

Or
(i)8MNO4+3S2O23+H2O8MNO2+6SO24+2OH
(ii)Cr2O27+3Sn2++14H+2Cr3++3Sn4++6H2O
