Question

When copper turnings are added to a clear solution of silver nitrate, a greyish deposit of silver is observed after some time. Silver gets precipitated and copper (II) nitrate is also formed.
The reaction is an example of??reaction and??is more reactive than?

Solution

Dear Student

This is displacement reaction (Cu is displacing Ag) as well as redox reaction (oxidation states of Cu and Ag are changed).

Oxidation number of Cu changes from 0 to 2 (oxidized).

Oxidation number of Ag changes from 1 to 0 (reduced).

Copper is more reactive than silver so it will displace silver nitrate solution.
Cu + 2Ag(NO3)2 -----> Cu(NO3)2 + 2Ag

The colourless solution of silver nitrate will turn to blue due to formation of copper nitrate and silver metal will deposit on the copper turnings.
