In 1962 it came to an end with a military coup. However, in 1990 elections were held and the National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won the election. But the military leaders of Myanmar refused to step down. They did not recognize the election results. The military even put the elected pro-democracy leaders, including Sun Kyi, under house arrest.
