a. South Africa became an independent democratic country in the year 1994, when the Republic of South Africa was born.
b. The nationalist movement was the result of apartheid system, against the racial segregation that was established under the Dutch and the British colonial rule.
c. The white Europeans imposed the system of apartheid on the blacks that divided the people on the basis of their skin
colour.
d. The discriminatory policies of apartheid regime sought to segregate blacks, considered them inferior and deprived them of socio economic and political equality.
e. Such a system, flouted the very principle of Equality as Blacks were denied equal opportunities, and followed oppressive discriminatory policies..
f. ​The movement against the apartheid was led by ANC , African National congress which led massive protest , demonstrations. strikes
g. Its prominent leader Nelson Mandela was arrested .
h. With years of protest and struggle, whites finally conceded.
i. After 28 years of imprisonment , Nelson Mandela was released and finally on 26 April 1994,​ a new independent nation was born with a democratic constitution.
j. Its constitution provided for
right to participation in political process, freedom of speech and expression, of religion, of property, freedom of movement, the constitution also provides for right to housing and food , right to access to good health care to all.
k. The constitution was promulgated in the year 1996 and came into effect in 1997.
