Prisoners were brutally tortured. Heavy fines were imposed on rebel villagers and the mouthpiece of the people, the press, was gagged. Dr. Bipan Chandra also mentions that such repressive tactics had not been employed since the Revolt of 1857. Hence, the August Movement did not last long and lost its drive by September 1942.
