Question

When do metals form there oxide or hydroxide when reacted with water?

Open in App
Solution

Metal + water …. Metal oxide + hydrogen

The metal oxided of highly reactive metals like sodium are water soluble hence further reaction takes place to form their hydroxides

In the case of not so reactive metals, energy has to be supplied for the reaction which is supplied by steam

Their oxides are not water soluble. Hence we get their oxides and hydrogen.
