When does an electric short circuit occur ? what harm can it do ?

Dear Student,
electric short-circuit occurs when the live wire and the neutral wire in direct contact.this occurs when-
i)the insulation of wires is damaged
ii)there is a fault in the electric appliance
the short-circuit will create a high unintended flow of current,and can cause sparks or fire.
