When does pulmonary oedema occur?

Open in App
Solution

Pulmonary edema:

  1. Pulmonary edema is a medical condition when fluid accumulates in air sacs of the lungs – the alveoli generally making it very generally difficult to breathe.
  2. This interferes with the gaseous exchange occurring inside causing respiratory failure.
  3. During such normal breathing, small air sacs in the lungs – alveoli – get filled up with air.
  4. Oxygen is taken in, & carbon dioxide is expelled from the body.
  5. Pulmonary edema occurs when the alveoli are flooded with the formed fluid.
  6. When alveoli are filled with fluid several problems occur as follows:
    1. Bloodstream does not get enough of oxygen.
    2. Accumulation of carbon dioxide
  7. Some common causes include sepsis (blood infection), pneumonia, exposure to harmful chemicals, kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, and congestive heart failure.
